While you are in the process of thinking about what great header design your website/business can use, you may not realize that you are spending most of your time conceptualizing your header design than other parts of your website.
I’ve worked on several header designs and while I have ideas of my own on how to create a captivating header design, the final say has to come from the people who are paying me to do my job.
It doesn’t mean though that as the designer, we can’t say anymore than yes, no, maybe, or we’ll try it out.
As designers, we’ll always have our grounds in making a header design look more compelling and captivating at first glance.
Size
Headers are made with specific measurement (weight pixels by height pixels), but the trick is how to improve the limited space for color, fonts and logo to blend together.
1. You can set a specific measurement (for easier css conversion), but you don’t have to crowd it with the entire idea you have for a header.
2. Minimalism is the big trend nowadays, you can use this approach provided you stick to the entire design concept you have for your entire website.
Font
Font style, color and size all play important roles in complimenting your main header design.
1. Simplify. Don’t go for font styles with overt layout unless if it’s really needed. Choose a simple but clear font style for your header design.
2. Clarity. Despite the color and blending properties you use for your text, make sure that it’s always clear. Not hazy, blurry, defocused or however you call it – it has to be CLEAR.
Color
Primary colors and secondary colors – it’s better if you have this already in your arsenal of shading and coloring knowledge but the thing is, the colors always have to match with the main header image you will incorporate it with.
1. Accents. Use accents in designs especially when using colors. It’s always effective to emphasize an object/text amongst other elements in a design (or pictures, paintings, movies, etc.).
2. Gradient. Photoshop gradients can be used in many ways. You can improve it to more than just two colors in one plane. Use it to enhance a surface or emphasize horizons. Play with it.
Follow Instructions
After you have done your great work, it wouldn’t be as pleasing as you thought it would be unless you followed instructions. Essentials are great but remember, you’re being paid to do your job.
So, give it your best shot and make sure it complies with what is needed as instructed. Here’s a direct link to this blog’s header design section. Don’t forget to hit us back with your comments! =)
